From Janis: Although I knew her work before, I’ve known Mary personally since Joan Baez invited us both to participate in a “Ring Them Bells” concert at the Bottom Line, New York. I see her every time I’m in Ireland, or she’s in America, and watch her family and crew argue over my wife’s background. (“And with that red hair and the Patton name when her family ‘came over’, were they from County Cork? Kilkenny? Waterford?”). I adore her and her husband, Joe. We’ve toured together in the Netherlands and Germany, had a glorious meal in Dublin (where she presented me with one of the most beautiful necklaces I’ve ever seen, I have no idea why but I do treasure it to this day), and my only regret in knowing them is that there’s an ocean between us.
On a rare day off in Dublin, I wrote “Mary’s Eyes”, thinking of Mary and her children. It remains one of my favorite songs, because it said exactly what I meant to say. She’s been been a driving force in womens’ rights forever, is as good a background vocalist and dancer as she is lead singer, and it’s my joy to have her here.
Please note that all artists are donating their time and work absolutely free, so you can have the pleasure of their company. For many of them, your purchase of merchandise, Facebook “likes”, website visits provide both financial help and encouragement. Several have asked me to add a charity they support themselves, and I’m happy to do so. In this case, Mary’s preferred charity is Women’s Aid.
BETTER TIMES WILL COME
(Janis Ian)
Better times, better times will come.
Better times, better times will come.
When this world learns to live as one,
oh, better times will come
When we greet each dawn without fear
knowing loved ones soon will be near
When the winds of war
cannot blow any more
Oh, better times will come
CHORUS
Though we live each day as our last
we know someday soon it will pass
We will dance, we will sing
in that never-ending spring
Oh, better times will come
CHORUS
