From Janis: One of the proudest moments in my life came while sharing a stage with Sam Bush and John Cash Jr. After my guitar solo on “Bright Lights & Promises”, Sam bowed down to me in homage. If you’re a musician, you know how much that meant! Born on a cattle farm in Kentucky, inspired by Bill Monroe and Bob Marley, his father hoped he’d be a fiddler. But at eleven years old, Sam heard Ricky Skaggs playing mandolin with Flatt & Scruggs, and shortly after, he bought his first mandolin. It’s all uphill from there. From New Grass Revival festival sets in late night slots reserved for “long-hairs and hippies”, to Emmylou Harris’ Nash Ramblers, Lyle Lovett, Bela Fleck, and now this project, he’s as eclectic as they come. And as sweetly humble. When I invited him to the project, he asked if I’d mind if he played guitar instead of mandolin, because the song put him in mind of an old Carter Family piece. High praise, indeed, from someone I admire greatly.
BETTER TIMES WILL COME
(Janis Ian)
Better times, better times will come.
Better times, better times will come.
When this world learns to live as one,
oh, better times will come
When we greet each dawn without fear
knowing loved ones soon will be near
When the winds of war
cannot blow any more
Oh, better times will come
CHORUS
Though we live each day as our last
we know someday soon it will pass
We will dance, we will sing
in that never-ending spring
Oh, better times will come
CHORUS
