From Janis: The first time I saw Jim Ferguson, a friend took me and bassist Willie Weeks to a tiny jazz club in Franklin, TN. I’d never met Willie (who ended up meeting Steve Gadd while playing on my next album, which led to his going on to tour with Gadd and Eric Clapton – how cool is that?!), but I loved sitting wth him. We laughed at the same notes, tapped at the same rhythms, and in general had a rocking good time – all thanks to Jim Ferguson’s incredible playing and singing. You won’t expect the beautiful timbre of his voice, unlike anything you’ve heard before. You also won’t know (though I’m about to tell you) that he’s one of the more unsung heroes in the music business. It’s hard to believe he isn’t a household name! Among others, he’s held down the bass for Teddy Wilson, Charlie Byrd, Kenny Burrell, Bernard Purdie, Stéphane Grappelli, Al Jarreau, “Big Joe” Williams, Stephan Karlsson, Nat Adderly, Randy Brecker, Benny Goodman, Lew Tabackin, Bill Watrous, John Pizzarelli, Jr. and his father, Bucky Pizzarelli, who did the amazing lick in the “At 17” single version in just one take – right onto the tape. In his spare time, Jim runs a bass repair shop in Nashville, TN.
Like I said, hard to believe he isn’t a household name.
BETTER TIMES WILL COME
(Janis Ian)
Better times, better times will come.
Better times, better times will come.
When this world learns to live as one,
oh, better times will come
When we greet each dawn without fear
knowing loved ones soon will be near
When the winds of war
cannot blow any more
Oh, better times will come
CHORUS
Though we live each day as our last
we know someday soon it will pass
We will dance, we will sing
in that never-ending spring
Oh, better times will come
CHORUS
