From Paulette: “I love singing and my spirit is free when I sing.”

From Janis: I rarely say a particular artist’s cover of my work is one of my favorites, because it’s such an honor when any artist chooses one of my songs – but Paulette’s version of “At Seventeen” from The Black & White Sessions is just… stunning. I love her voice, her phrasing, her choice of space, the way she lets the song breathe. I love her work so much that when I heard she was cutting a new album, I actually solicited her and asked if I could write something for it. (You’ll hear “Summer In New York” when the album comes out, and if I do say so myself, it’s one of my better songs. Then again, I had some great inspiration.)

It’s fantastic when someone who was a Harlette with Bette Midler, did duets with Johnny Mathis and Bobby Caldwell, and sang backup with the likes of Mary J. Blige, Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson, Billy Idol, David Bowie, and Michael Buble does a solo album. I, for one, will be among the first in line to buy it. Paulette, a personal thank you from me for the honor you do my work.

(Janis Ian)

Better times, better times will come.
Better times, better times will come.
When this world learns to live as one,
oh, better times will come

When we greet each dawn without fear
knowing loved ones soon will be near
When the winds of war
cannot blow any more
Oh, better times will come

Though we live each day as our last
we know someday soon it will pass
We will dance, we will sing
in that never-ending spring
Oh, better times will come
